Gartner predicts that 30% of companies will automate their network activities by 2026

In recent years, automation has emerged as one of the main strategies for companies seeking to optimize operations and increase process efficiency. For example, PRIO, the largest independent oil and gas company in Brazil, has leveraged robotic process automation (RPA) to enhance efficiency while reducing costs and ensuring safety.

According to a recent forecast by Gartner, this trend shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, by 2026, approximately 30% of companies are expected to automate more than half of their network activities.

This forecast highlights a decisive shift towards more agile and resilient network operations, ushering in a new era of enterprise infrastructure management. Learn more about the research:

Gartner’s forecast

Gartner predicts that 30% of companies will automate their network activities by 2026, driven by factors such as the growing complexity of infrastructures and the demand for more agile and efficient operations.

Corporate networks are becoming increasingly complex, requiring dynamic and intelligent management. In this context, automation has emerged as a solution to simplify and optimize processes, offering scalability, reducing human errors, and ensuring swift responses to market demands.

According to Chris Saunderson, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, “Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) leaders are increasingly seeking AI-driven insights and augmented decision-making, including intelligent automation, to enhance operational resilience, handle complexity, and process large amounts of data through automation.”

Intelligent automation for Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) involves leveraging artificial intelligence techniques, including Generative AI (GenAI), to support decision-making and execute automated actions within I&O processes. This innovative technology is positioned as a key solution for enabling more agile business operations and delivering sophisticated I&O services.

Currently, intelligent automation is in the “Trough of Disillusionment” phase of the Gartner Hype Cycle for I&O Automation 2024. This stage reflects a period of reevaluation where the initial excitement wanes, and the technology’s purpose comes under scrutiny. Widespread adoption is expected within the next five to ten years.

GenAI has introduced a new market demand for smart platforms that integrate advanced analytics and automation. These platforms, enhanced by AI capabilities, streamline operations, boost efficiency, and provide valuable insights to optimize companies’ infrastructures and processes.

Growth of hyperautomation

Gartner highlights the trend in network automation as part of a broader IT movement: hyperautomation. This strategy integrates various technologies to automate processes and improve business performance and productivity. According to Gartner, hyperautomation remains a cornerstone for 90% of large corporations, experiencing a “significant surge in interest and demand” since the rise of GenAI in late 2022.

Frances Karamouzis, Vice President Analyst at Gartner, explains that hyperautomation involves a combination of multiple tools and technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, event-driven software architectures, and robotic process automation, among others. However, fewer than 20% of companies excel at measuring the effectiveness of their hyperautomation initiatives.

“Hyperautomation initiatives are often a critical component of a broader tech strategy that spans systems of record on one end and AI or GenAI on the other,” said Karamouzis.

The demand for hyperautomation is fueled by the need for operational excellence and resilience. This growing demand continues to drive the expansion of hyperautomation offerings.

Why are companies investing in network activity automation?

Companies are increasingly directing investments into network automation due to its strategic benefits. Automation minimizes human errors, which are common in manual processes and can compromise network stability. It also enhances operational efficiency by quickly identifying and responding to incidents, reducing the likelihood of disruptions that impact productivity.

Another key advantage is improved security. Automated systems enable consistent policy implementation and faster updates to counter emerging threats, making operations more reliable and secure. As infrastructure complexity grows, these capabilities help maintain consistent operations and reduce risks.

The role of governance and orchestration in automation

As companies progress with automation, the need for well-structured governance becomes critical. Governance ensures automated processes run securely, in alignment with organizational goals, by regulating operations through defined guidelines and standards. This reduces risks and ensures compliance.

Centralized orchestration further enhances automation management by coordinating multiple automated tasks within a single platform. This simplifies operations and provides visibility and control over all network activities.
